I wrote a essay last year on Joseph Stalin and learned about his evil rule in The Soviet Union and the amount of people he killed during the war. (3 million recorded deaths many being his own people) It made me ponder. Who is worse? Stalin or Hitler? Now, Hitler got the head start b/c we have known about his reign of terror for quite some time. Until 1991 we looked at Stalin as a man that got the Soviets out of the great depression. Then we learned he had to kill millions of people to do it. I would say that they are both just as bad as the other. In total Stalin killed more people than hitler but if hitler was given the time, he probably would have wiped out an entire race.

Stalin's policies definitely led to the death of more than 3 million people.
If you consider how many people went through the meat-grinder known as the Gulag Archipalego (several million died there), his starvation of the Ukraine in the 1930s (4-5 million?), etc. he definitely killed more than Herr Hitler.
Both of them were not very nice people. You're probably right, in that, if Hitler were given the chance he'd have killed a lot more than the 6-7 million during WWII.
