In this unit, we learned how King and Chamberlain used the policy of appeasement to keep Germany from attacking. It seemed to me that it was in part out of fear of an attack and in part out of pity from the treaty of Versailles. This policy seems like it might work for a while, but it would be SO easy to abuse and manipulate this policy in order to get what you want; which is exactly what the Germans did. Is it not? They were smart to take advantage of it, but we should have seem it coming. It almost makes sense to abuse the policy. I guess you'd have to have extremely strong morals of be extremely dumb to not.

Winston Churchill was one of the few politicians in England to recognize that appeasement would only encourage Hitler. Churchill was ignored and labeled a "war monger" though by critics in and outside of England. Churchill preached that dealing with the fascists meant you had to be willing to use armed force. This was a very unpopular view to hold in the democracies following the end of World War I and during the trying times of the Great Depression.
