Honestly? They expected women to go back to just being home makers after accomplishing so much with the men gone over seas. They worked just like the men, same jobs, same work ethic, yet they got paid less. Women of war times didn't give up or give in when the men were gone fighting. Since the men were gone for so long women took on more and more in public lives. They were able to advanc their position in society and set themselves up for the freedoms and rights we have today. Why would people expect women to go back to what they were doing four years before when alot had obviously changed?

I think people would assume women would "go back" as you say because although women had been in the factories for four years women had been repressed for at least four centuries. It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks...but not impossible.
