I still cannot understand how both the french and english sides were so angry with one another that they couldnt even be happy when sir wilfred laurier found a middle ground and the both got part of what they wanted. its better than nothing isnt it? still its amazing how enemy cultures can hold grudges against eacother for so long. they were really unhappy and only accepted sir wilfred's comprimise because they really had no other option. but wow, the amount of hostility between the french and english still amazes me.

The problem with people is that they are by nature "tribalistic". They identify first and foremost with the "tribe" they were born into (and are resistant to tolerating or accepting members of other tribes/groups).
By "tribe" I mean "Christianity" or "English" or "French" (or any other label by which people self-sort themselves). Tribes are created.
This is just human nature. Sceptics, people that question everything and ask tough questions, by and large are the only ones willing to step out of their particular tribe and understand what it's like to belong to another's tribe. In fact, a sceptic (true sceptic) would understand that the only reason you or I actually belong to this or that tribe is by virtue of the shear accident of our birth. It was not fated; it was random.
And so if tribes are random then perhaps they can be transcended.
