When Canada and the United States were resolving issues and improving their relations they didnt resolve everything. There was still the Alaskan Border Dispute. What i dont understand is why Britain sided with the Americans! Canada was tied to England and the English wanted Canada to fight for them in their wars and be involved with them in that sort of way, so why did they betray them like that! Sure maybe they thought that it would help them in the long run to give a little bit to the US, but i dont think it helped them as much as it hurt them in their relationship with Canada. I dont see how they could side with the Americans... how did they choose? To me it only makes sense that Alaska be part of Canada. Its stupid to have the U.S, and then a random chunk way up north, its not very practical in my opinion.

Britain before World War I controlled Canada's foreign policy.
Britain sides with the Americans because the British were anxious to preserve strong ties and good relations with the USA. If the British sided with Canada during this dispute, there's the possibility the USA may have sided with Germany (or remained completely neutral) during World War I (1914 AD).
In international politics, when you give something (like say the Alaskan Panhandle) you expect something (alliance, beneficial trade agreements) in return. Britain was just being practical.
From a Canadian point of view, yeah I think we probably got hosed there. The good thing is this dispute led Canadians to demand more independence from England (so some good came from it).
