In 1872 the Dominion Land Act was passed. It said that an adult male could purchase a quater section of land for ten dollars. His only requirments were that he had to build a shelter, farm the land and live on the property for six months a year for three years. Once he did all of that he would receive the title to the land. The important part was that it had to be a male. Although woman could not buy land or recieve a homestead, there was a way that they could own land. If a man was married and applied for a homestead but then died before he finished all the requirments, his widow could then live and the land. If she finished the requiments she would recieve the title to the land. I couldn't find any evidence of a woman applying for a homestead but there were cases when they could recieve a homestead.

Thanks for looking that up, Curtis. I think women are given the right to own own land in their own right by 1911 (the "Dower Act").
