Treaties, whats the deal with them? My understanding of treaties is that we took first nations peoples land in exchange for special privileges or treaty rights, such as free schooling, less taxation, etc. The Americans on the other hand, choose to take the land by force, killing the first nations peoples, until there were little left. Is there a better way we could have used the land without stealing it or making treaties?

Treaties in the Canadian context does not imply we "took" the land and gave the natives something in return. Instead, the proper way to understand it is we came to an agreement to "share" the land and in exchange, etc.
There'd be no way to gain the land without using conquest or treaties, Regan. The people that originally occupied it would have resisted the entry of new comers (leading to war or to the signing of treaties). You want the land you have to make sure no one is there and then you can just take it.
