When reading about the Battle of Tippecanoe, i came across this idea of "Manifest Destiny" which the Americans had attained. According to the readings, many Americans felt they were destined to be the conquerors of North America. The American Indians were the main opposers to this, therefore the American authority practiced war against them in a land of conquest. How exactly did this "Manifest Destiny" come to be? Obviously, the frightful rumors the Americans hear about them cause some disdain, but, since the colonies were Protestant in origin, couldn't've they just tried to convert them to Christianity or try to take the Spanish & French possessions soutward instead?

I'm thinking "manifest destiny" was a term slapped on to a pre-existing mentality or unspoken policy.
That policy would be the American desire to expand westward BUT having been denied that right for decades by the French and then English...this desire to expand became a fully articulated imperialistic philosophy.
