I apologize if this entry is confusing. I dont know very much on this subject and some of my information may be off. Im writing to simply get a better understanding.
Canadians have been gradually occupying first nation land. In some cases this was done without treaty or agreement, they simply found the land and said "mine".

In other cases, land that was promised to the first nation peoples were not granted. In Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba treaties were signed for land rights in return for the canadians teaching the first nations about agriculture and how to live without the buffalo. In the treaties there was something about canadians giving the first nations education. But in British Columbia, the native tribes never signed a treaty with anyone for rights to their land. Now these first nation peoples are struggling trying to claim the land that is rightfully theirs.
I personally don't understand the controversy over land claims (I am also not extremely educated on this subject). I am not first nation, so this may be why I have this beleif. I feel like there shouldn't be any controvery at all. The first nations who live in Canada are Canadians just as us "white" people are. I don't understand why we must be seperated as people, because we are all human beings created under the same God and Canada is such a multi cultural nation. It is our land, both the first nations and the "white" people. Why is there still controversy I understand it was wrong for the Canadians to take over the first nations lands, but that was a long time ago. We are equal peoples, why cant we coexist without this division between us?
