During reading 4.3 while talking about Durham's solution to the rebellions in Upper and Lower Canada, Durham says that the french need to be wiped out by becoming a minority and eventually being dissolved by all the English. However when the plan started to take action to get rid of the French, someone did not really think things through. The idea of creating a English majority kind of failed when some smart person(sarcasm) decided to give the English and the French the same number of seats in the house of assembly. I don't understand how creating a political deadlock solved the problem. Any thoughts on how or why this happened?

I think the idea behind uniting the two assemblies into one was not obviously to create political deadlock. I think the intention was for the English to eventually outnumber the French through a combination of immigration and reproduction. And once the English had superior numbers they'd occupy more of the seats in the Assembly.
